Looking Back: NASA Space Apps Challenge 2024 Breaks New Ground
In 2024, the NASA International Space Apps Challenge set new records and brought together a global community of innovators. With 93,520 participants from 163 countries and territories, this year’s event proved just how powerful collective creativity and open data can be.
Global Collaboration in Action
The hackathon kicked off with a message from NASA Associate Administrator Dr. Nicky Fox, the Heliophysics team, and representatives from 15 Space Agency Partners. The enthusiasm was palpable as over 15,444 teams formed worldwide, tackling 20 diverse challenges. By the end, nearly 10,000 projects were submitted—ranging from apps and websites to videos and creative works.
Open Data Drives Innovation
Participants had access to an unprecedented amount of space-based data from NASA and its international partners. This open exchange of resources fuelled new solutions and pushed the boundaries of what’s possible in exploration and discovery.
Celebrating the Sun: “The Sun Touches Everything”
The 2024 theme focused on the Sun’s far-reaching impact, celebrating NASA Heliophysics’ Helio Big Year. Teams explored how solar activity shapes weather, climate, plant life, and more. One standout challenge invited participants to interpret the May 2024 geomagnetic storms through visual or performing arts—a creative approach that helped make scientific phenomena more accessible to the public.
Expanding Partnerships
This year, the Space Apps community welcomed two new partners:
- Spanish Space Agency
- Communications, Space & Technology Commission of Saudi Arabia
They joined agencies from Australia, Brazil, Canada, Europe, India, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Argentina, Bahrain, Paraguay, South Africa, and Turkey—further enriching the event’s global scope.
Building a Global Community
For the third year running, India, Egypt, Pakistan, Brazil, and Turkey led in registrations. The hackathon saw 485 local events held across cities and towns, both in-person and online. The Universal Event offered a virtual venue for those without a local event nearby, attracting 5,796 participants.
Support was woven throughout the experience:
- 120 Subject Matter Experts shared guidance and answered questions
- 26 Navigators helped teams stay on track
- 26 Amplification Collaborators spread awareness
- 14 Global Offers provided additional resources
The Impact
Looking back, it’s clear that NASA Space Apps 2024 fostered a culture of learning, creativity, and exploration. Every participant—organiser, collaborator or hacker—helped make this year’s hackathon memorable.
The excitement continues into 2025. The announcement of the 10 Global Winners is scheduled for 16 January 2025, alongside the reveal of next year’s challenge dates.
