NASA Space Apps Challenge: A Global Tech Phenomenon

The NASA Space Apps Challenge stands as one of the world's largest and most dynamic hackathons, drawing tens of thousands of creative minds every year. Organised annually by NASA, the event unites students, engineers, programmers, technologists, entrepreneurs and scientists from around the globe to collaborate and solve real-world problems using NASA's open data.

The Scale of Space Apps 2024

The 2024 edition marked another milestone in the challenge’s impressive history:
  • 93,520 registered participants from all backgrounds and skill levels joined the event.
  • 15,444 teams tackled unique challenges set by NASA.
  • 485 local venues across 163 countries and territories hosted Space Apps events—showcasing its truly global reach.
  • 9,996 projects were submitted, addressing topics such as climate change, space exploration, robotics, artificial intelligence and data visualisation.
  • The challenge received support from 15 partner space agencies, providing additional expertise and resources.
  • 120 subject matter experts and 26 navigators guided participants throughout the weekend.

More Than Just Coding

Space Apps isn’t only about tech. It’s a multidisciplinary contest that encourages participants to combine creative problem-solving, teamwork, project management and open science. Teams work on global issues yet to be solved, using NASA’s open data to address pressing challenges on Earth and beyond.
Solutions born at Space Apps often go far beyond the hackathon itself. Winning ideas are frequently developed further, commercialised or even applied in real missions and policy-making. The event is a launch pad for innovation and cross-disciplinary collaboration.

Fostering Collaboration and Discovery

By bringing together people from so many countries and disciplines, the Space Apps Challenge highlights what’s possible when global communities unite under a common goal. The event not only showcases technological talent but also fosters international partnerships, creativity and curiosity.
