NASA Space Apps: Where Global Innovation Takes Off

NASA Space Apps is not just a programme—it’s a worldwide movement powered by curiosity, creativity, and collaboration. Run by NASA’s Science Mission Directorate, Space Apps brings together people from every corner of the globe to solve real-world problems using free, open data from NASA and its international partners. This initiative is a beacon for transparency and teamwork, showing what’s possible when minds unite.

The Backbone of NASA Space Apps

Funded by NASA’s Earth Science Division and supported by Booz Allen Hamilton, Mindgrub, and SecondMuse, the Space Apps programme is steered by the passionate NASA Space Apps Global Organising (GO) Team. These dedicated organisers rally Local Leads and participants, making sure everyone—from first-timers to seasoned techies—gets the support they need to shine.

What We Stand For

At NASA Space Apps, we believe there’s always room for another brilliant idea. We work hard to create a space where everyone belongs, feels comfortable sharing their authentic self, and is encouraged to dream big. Respect and professionalism are non-negotiable, and collaboration is at the core of everything we do. Bullying and discrimination have no place here—if you ever need help, the GO Team is ready to step in.

The World’s Biggest Hackathon: NASA International Space Apps Challenge

Imagine thousands of creative minds from across the globe coming together for a two-day adrenaline rush of innovation—the NASA International Space Apps Challenge is the world’s largest annual hackathon. Participants gather at hundreds of locations (both online and in-person), teaming up to tackle challenges designed by NASA experts. The topics range from stunning artistic visualisations of space data to designing apps that could help people on Earth or in orbit.
After the hackathon ends, projects go under the microscope of space agency experts. Winners get one of ten coveted Global Awards—and for many, this event sparks new startups, opens career doors, and forges lifelong friendships.
Mark your calendar: the next NASA Space Apps Challenge blasts off on 4–5 October 2025.
